Smart Plugs, Simple Savings: A Starter Guide

A smart plug fitted into a wall socket

You do not need a smart home. You need one smart plug, aimed at the right appliance. Everything else is a hobby — a fine hobby, but let's be honest about it.

Where a smart plug earns its keep

What to look for when buying

Match the rating to the load: a 10A plug is fine for the TV corner, but geysers and heaters need a 16A model — this is not the place to save eighty rupees. Stick to brands with a local app presence, and check that the plug works on plain Wi-Fi without a hub.

What to skip for now

Smart bulbs in every room, voice assistants in every corner, sensors on every door. Run one plug for a month first. If your electricity bill and your morning routine both improve, expand. If not, you have spent very little to learn something true about your own household.
